A ship comes with a chunk of machinery and systems that help it to operate every day in a hassle-free way. Lubrication plays an imperative role in the smooth running of this machinery. Lubrication minimizes heat, neutralizes acid combustion by-products, avoids scuffing, and reduces friction. Thus, it helps in combating wear and tear between two running surfaces.
Lubricating oil in its passage through a diesel engine may get contaminated or polluted by wear particles, ignition products and water. The centrifuge (act as a purifier) usually removes these impurities continuously.
If a large quantity of oil flows through a system this indicates that full flow lubrication would be very costly. A bypass system that draws muddy oil from low down in the oil sump remote from the pump suction and returns clean and unsoiled oil close to the pump suction, is therefore used. Since this is mainly a bypass system thus the goal is to give the lowest degree of impurity for the complete system. This means you need to run the centrifuge slightly below the maximum throughput.
Water-washing during centrifuging can be accepted if the oil manufacturer or supplier agrees. But sometimes, oils contain water-soluble additives that could be lost if water-washed. Water-washing has several advantages including the dissolving and removal of acids, better separation by wetting solid impurities and the continuous renewal of the bowl liquid seal. Detergent-type oils are primarily used for cleaning and lubricating.
Steam turbines
The lubricating oil in a steam turbine often gets contaminated by system impurities and water from condensed steam. So, bypass separation is recommended to clean the oil. The dirty oil is collected from the bottom of the sump and clean oil returned near the pump suction. Water washing of the oil used to be done if the manufacturer or supplier of the oil permits it.
Ship Automation is an illustrious company that deals with various ship spare parts like ship automation system, lubricating oil purifiers, marine automation system, and marine control system. The company can supply new and refurbished spare parts of centrifuges. To know more about the company and its products, just visit the official website.
