Controls and Governors: a realistic solution for marine vessel
In marine technology governor and controls are devices which maintain the rotary speed of an engine or other important mover within reasonably close limits irrespective of the load. A typical governor controls the speed of the engine by fluctuating the rate at which fuel is furnished to it. The variations in the load on the engine may arise due to multiple factors like rough seas, rolling and pitching of the vessel, weight changes of the ship and many more.
Classification of governor
Based on design and construction, the governor can be classified in three ways.
Mechanical governor: These types of governors comprise of weighted balls or flyweights which experience a centrifugal force when rotated by the action of the engine crankshaft.

These are affordable.
They are primarily used when it is important to maintain an exact speed depending on the load.
They possess only a few parts and simple in construction.
Hydraulic governor: In hydraulic governors, the weighted is connected to a control valve instead of the fuel control racks directly.

They have a high-power output
They have high accuracy and precision
These governors are highly efficient
Maintenance of hydraulic governors is simple and easy
Electro-Hydraulic governors: These governors have an actuator with two sections and they are a mechanical hydraulic backup and an electric governor. When the electric governor fails, the unit can be controlled manually.
